The Fast-Food Giant Takes Down AI-Generated Festive Advertisement In the Wake of Backlash.
The global fast-food chain has removed a Christmas commercial created via generative AI after facing considerable public disapproval.
The short ad was developed via AI-generated video and was first uploaded publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.
Viewer Reaction and Removal
Following its publication, audiences online lambasted the employment of AI in the film. A number of described it as "creepy" and "awkwardly stitched together".
"This experience represents an important lesson as we explore the effective use of generative technology," stated a representative from the company.
The advert was created for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted a series of scenarios that can go wrong during the Christmas break, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".
A Growing Movement of AI-Generated Ads
Commercials that incorporate AI-created content have become a increasing trend among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas period.
- Coca-Cola has similarly launched back-to-back AI-generated holiday commercials.
- Technical Challenges: Since clips created with current AI video tools are prone to distort the longer they run, the majority of such clips tend to be only short in length.
- Broader Implications: The video also raised fears about job displacement in the advertising sector, with some observers pointing out it could reduce opportunities for production staff.
Defense from the Creators
After the video's removal, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
Bridge claimed, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".
"This was not an AI trick," she commented. "We consider it a proper commercial."
Divisive Public Reception
While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the response for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas spot from Coca-Cola reportedly garnered a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.
However, several companies have also received criticism for employing the technique in their campaigns. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".
The situation underscores the continuing discussion within the marketing and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
